Three brothers respond to Wish Book

By HOLLY HAYES / Mercury News

A few days after the first of the Wish Book stories began appearing in the Mercury News, three Cupertino brothers gathered a whole bunch of change from various baskets and jars and sat down to do some serious coin counting.

A couple of hours later, they had a box of neatly rolled pennies, dimes and quarters. The total: $120. Then Max Feit, 13, and his brothers Jacob, 9, and Cameron, 5, asked their mom to drive them to the Mercury News to deliver their very heavy gift.

``It's an expression of tzedaka, which means charity in Hebrew,'' said Sarah Feit who, with her husband, Andrew, encourage their sons to be involved in their community.

The boys were moved by the Nov. 21 Wish Book story about Kathleen Davey and her family. She is the wife and mom from Campbell who has been in medical facilities for most of the last year, instead of at home, as she has struggled to recover from a brain injury.

Many readers have been inspired by the Davey family this holiday season. In fact, response to all of the Wish Book stories has been strong this year, despite the uncertain economy.

For 22 years, thousands of Mercury News readers have helped neighbors in their communities through the Wish Book.

Wish Book readers are invited to earmark their gifts to particular stories or causes, or make general contributions. Donations of any size continue to be welcome and are tax deductible.

If more money comes in than is needed for a specific wish, we'll use the extra funds to pay for other wishes in the series. Any money left over will provide camp and class scholarships to families who can't afford these experiences for their children.

Many readers dedicate their donations in honor or memory of loved ones. Others give anonymously. Following is a partial list of donors:
