S.J. students put best foot forward
By HOLLY HAYES / Mercury News
Around the holidays, second-graders at Cureton Elementary School in East San Jose were working on a lesson about kindness when their teachers decided to use the stories in the 2004 Wish Book series as fodder for classroom discussion.
They selected five of the stories to be read aloud to the second-grade classes, who would then vote on where a group donation would be made.
``Christmas is the perfect time to teach children about helping others,'' teacher Susan Avinger said.
When the children learned about the ``Step Ahead Shoe Project'' -- a program InnVision wants to start to provide homeless people with proper-fitting shoes -- the matter was settled.
``We began collecting money the last weeks before Christmas vacation,'' said Avinger, whose fellow second-grade teachers are Spring Chao, Chris Cordova, Diane Shelton and Amanda Tylicki. ``Since many of these children are from low-income families and have needs of their own, we were very proud of their endeavors.''
The five classes of second-graders collected $125 to present to InnVision, the San Jose-based agency that provides a range of support services for the homeless.
Wish Book readers are invited to earmark their gifts to particular stories or causes or make general contributions. Donations of any size continue to be welcome and are tax-deductible.
