Published Sunday, February 6, 2005, in the San Jose Mercury News

on Christmas Day, we were happy to report that an outpouring of donations to the Wish Book made possible a very magical trip to the Magic Kingdom — Disneyland — for a grieving San Jose family.

Nicky Cruz and his four children —Nicky Jr., 13, Gonzolo, 12, Marilyn, 8, and little Stephanie, 5 — were grateful for the opportunity to have four days away from their cramped east San Jose apartment to be together as a family. They are still reeling from the hit-and-run accident that took the life of Cruz's wife and the kids' mother, Rocio Mendez, in October.

In our Dec. 25 story, Cruz thanked those who helped give his family such a special excursion.

The support from the community continues. Readers' donations also are helping with household expenses as Cruz struggles to make his way as a single parent. They are "most appreciative'' of the financial assistance, said Victor Reyes of the Santa Clara County Victim Witness Assistance Center, which also is providing support for the family.
