KATHLEEN DAVEY BACK IN THE ARMS OF HER FAMILY

Rachel Davey kisses her mom after Kathleen Davey's return home Friday. Kathleen, whom doctors describe as "minimally responsive,'' puckered her lips at her daughter's touch, a first in her rehabilitation.

The Davey family

Published Sunday, February 6, 2005, in the San Jose Mercury News

kathleen Davey is back home and in the arms of her family Ð thanks in no small part to donations from Wish Book readers.

The 38-year-old mother of two young girls is struggling to regain ground after suffering severe brain damage after cardiac arrest just over a year ago. Her husband, Saratoga High School teacher and coach Mike Davey, has anguished over the challenge of creating an environment that would give her the best possible chance for recovery.

The tale of the Davey family's wish to bring Kathleen home Ð away from the institutional setting of hospitals and rehabilitation facilities and into the warmth of their Campbell home Ð went straight to the hearts of Mercury News readers.

After their story appeared Nov. 21, donations poured in, providing thousands of dollars worth of medical equipment that made this very special homecoming possible.

It hasn't been without setbacks. Her initial return home in December was cut short when complications sent Kathleen back to the hospital. But steady improvements came in the last few weeks, and on Feb. 4, the family van once again brought her home.

Now daughters Samantha, 7, and Rachel, 5, can see their mom every day, right in the sunlight-filled room Mike added to their home. They'll help with her therapy as much as they can, joining a small army of family members and friends who have built a solid support network for the Daveys.

"You know what?'' Rachel said to her aunt Kimberly, who has been helping to care for the girls. "I gave Mommy a kiss and hug and told her to get well soon.''
