St. Joseph students help fulfill wishes

Mercury News

Touched by a teenager's wish for a renovated bedroom, eighth-graders at St. Joseph of Cupertino School are pooling allowances, babysitting money and cash earned from other chores to help the young girl with Tourette's syndrome have a brighter future.

At the other end of the school, kindergarteners have chosen a YMCA child care center to benefit from donations they earn by cleaning their rooms and helping around the house.

For the third consecutive year, students at St. Joseph's are raising money to make contributions to the Holiday Wish Book. Each class in the K-8 school has selected one ``wish'' they'd like to help come true.

``We ask that the children earn the money they donate,'' Principal Mary Lyons said. ``That allows them to really understand the meaning of giving, of offering something of themselves.''

Students will present their donations at an Advent program Thursday in the St. Joseph of Cupertino parish hall.

For 19 years, Mercury News readers have been learning about community needs through the Wish Book. Many, like the young people at St. Joseph, choose to take the next step and make the holidays brighter by sending in a contribution toward helping their neighbors.
